Henry Ward Beecher: Lectures on Preaching

This book contains the lectures that Beecher gave at Yale for the first Yale Lectures on Preaching, named after Beecher's father. This particular book is in good condition (I keep it in an archival box for protection.). The phrase "Author's Edition", on the cover, means that this particular book is published with the permission of the author. Before copyrights were strictly enforced, many printers, especially those in other countries, would print unauthorized or "pirated" copies of books. The phrase "Author's Edition" was meant to ensure the integrity & honesty of the publisher and guarantee the author proper royalties.

Beecher illustrates the all too common characteristic of powerful men in the ministry: questionable ethics. During his lifetime, he was accused several times of immorality.

John Broadus: Preparation & Delivery of Sermons

Title Page from 1871 edition of John Broadus' well-known book on preaching. The words "Second Edition" refer to the second printing of the 1st edition, published in 1870. I collect pre-1900 editions of this book and have 11 pre-1900 editions and nine 1900 and later. Several years ago, I was able to view and handle Broadus' original manuscript. Still one of the best books on preaching.

Editor's Suggestions Received This Week

Now I have to spend a few days reviewing the editor's suggestions---he has made the book better.

The Pastor As Scholar

Link to D.A. Carson--"The Pastor As Scholar"---good topic

Worth paying attention to by all in the ministry.

Christian Philosophy

Over the last few months, I have emailed Christian philosophers and have asked them at what point
does "Christian philosophy" become "not Christian". I have been amazed at how reluctant they are to answer my question. Most just didn't respond. One or two responded with sarcasm. Alvin Plantinga, however,
did respond [briefly] and said that if someone denied the resurrection as part of his "philosophy", then that philosopher was not doing Christian philosophy. Plantinga was answering an example I gave him in order to encourage a response. I sent a followup to him, but he never responded. Strange.

Dr. Walter Kaiser, Jr

Dr. Kaiser speaking at Huntington University, explaining how God's attribute of love relates
to God's commanding the destruction of some people. As he was speaking, I noticed several
students not paying attention, sitting with their feet over the back of the chair in front of them. The
problem was not with Dr. Kaiser's lecture, but with what is being taught [or not taught] to students
at Huntington University.
